:axothink:

What would/do you use for internet messaging?

@daisuke telegram and whatsapp are not comparable :0300:

telegram is my choice if you want convenience. signal if you want privacy.

@Sushubh
>telegram and whatsapp are not comparable

I bet most people wouldn't be able to tell apart one for the other, they work and look very much the same.

I also use Telegram, but most people i know use Whatsapp only due to herd mentality.

@daisuke yup. this is one of the few spaces where you cannot decide which platform you want to use over another. unless you go rogue.

(primary difference is that in whatsapp everything happens on your phone. telegram stores everything in cloud so your phone is not required.)

@Sushubh I DID ended up forcing some people to install Telegram to talk to me :comfyevil: I bet they don't use it for anything but talking to me but at least they get to try something else aside from the same.

@daisuke same. i refuse to stay in groups or chat on whatsapp on my phone. except if it is absolutely essential. whatsapp is a heavily abused platform here in india and has resulted in murders and whatnot.

I don't want to say it but Matrix. Encrypted groups, normie friendly.
@Sushubh @fluffy @daisuke

Yea. the homeserver reference implementation (synapse) is apparently a huge resource hog for decently large servers, and the main client (riot) is an electron app. But otherwise it works pretty well. You can even do 1-to-1 voice calls if you set up a TURN server.

>works pretty well

its still very garbage and i wouldnt call it normie friendly, the e2ee UX and error messages need to be improved, and everyone needs to stop using the matrix.org homeserver. as it stands its very centralised still

that said i use it because it has bridging for discord among other shit

Don't get me wrong about this post I'm all for Ditto chat, it'll help people move to Matrix which right now (debatably) is a good solution for privacy. I like it because of the number of developers you can find in rooms and share projects with each other.
