Within GNOME we're currently having a discussion about replacing the terms "master" and "slave". Most people are in favor of such a movement, but the point of contention is on changing the name of the git master branch. Not everyone is convinced that master by itself is harmful. Personally I am not affected by it, but I understand that it can make people uncomfortable.
Does anyone feel bothered by the term master alone, even in the context of "master copy" and such? Input from non-white, non-male people highly appreciated here.
@brainblasted My opinion (non-white since you asked). Changes like master -> mainline is a change that have other benefits (easier to understand) so it's a good one. Words that are within the GNOME project should be changed if the patch is complete and thorough, avoiding it's distraction is worth it. If it's words referring to stuff outside of the GNOME project (IDE comes to mind), it should not be changed, unless the other side changes first.
