Esimerkiksi:

Hey FediFriends ™️! So, hypothetically speaking let's say I ordered a new phone from my provider, #GoogleFi, a couple years ago. And say that when the phone still hadn't arrived a month later Fi sent a replacement. Now let's say that 6 months later that first phone finally arrived out of the blue. Okay, and now let's pretend that I just tucked that phone unopened in a drawer, and now replacement phone is having hardware issues.

Is there a way to use said phone without raising the ire of the Fi?

Phone service pricing is so strange. Until today, Google Fi Simply Unlimited was:

• 1 line: $50
• 2: $80 ($40/ea)
• 3: $80 ($26.67/ea)
• 4: $80 ($20/ea)
• 5: $100 ($20/ea)
• 6: $120 ($20/ea)

Today they bumped it to:

• 1 line: $50
• 2: $80 ($40/ea)
• 3: $90 ($30/ea)
• 4: $100 ($25/ea)
• 5: $125 ($25/ea)
• 6: $150 ($25/ea)

…which is fine for me; $25/line is still pretty inexpensive for 4+ lines. But like… how do they come up with these numbers??

Ugh. I'm generally happy with roaming on #GoogleFi, but its German MVNO partner is blocking port 995, so I can't access my mail server, and tech support is like, "If you want to report a mail problem, you must initiate a chat request from that email address." I'm stuck in circles - obviously I can't login to the Google Fi app with a non-Google address, and this isn't an email problem, it's a connectivity problem. ALL outbounds on 995 are blocked, not just to my server.

My Pixel 7A has now moved from @Efani to #googlefi not because of any complaints with Efani, but Fi has international plans that are a lot better since I’m traveling back and forth to Europe and Morocco as well as Israel over next year for cybersecurity work and events. My iPhone will remain on Efani for security reasons as it is my most exposed number. #cybersecurity #infosec #cellphone #simjacking

Moving from one device to another on Android (Pixel 7 Pro to 8 Pro) really gives you a perspective for the myriad of ways diff app designers and publishers use to transfer your identity and data between devices.

Especially when it comes to security related apps. Tokens, Password Managers, Banking Apps etc. Some of them are super simple, some of them are annoyingly tedious.

Lots of trust places in the platforms authentication (and you have to trust something) and this tends to lead to better experiences from a customer perspective.

I see generally a mix of 2 methods. Trust in the platform, and it backing up encrypted information that is then downloaded and decrypted once platform trust has been established on the new device, with lots of alerting and the such that things are happening.

The second way is direct use of the previous trust on the previous device in the previous app, to establish trust in the new app on the new device. QR codes displayed from the old app, or codes given.

Lastly, a lot of "let me SMS you a code" happening, which I dislike. Especially given the shoddy terrible experience of moving the same eSIM between devices on #Telstra here in AU (which is tied to their own platform auth that is less than stelar), vs on #GoogleFi in the US (which is tightly tied to the platform).

The email I got from #Google about #GoogleFi wanting to share federally protected #CPNI data for ads is honestly almost comically awful.

> Google Fi Wireless takes your privacy seriously.
> It’s your right and our duty under federal law to protect the confidentiality of your CPNI.
> From time to time, Fi may wish to provide you with [targeted ads based on your CPNI]
> Starting today, we will opt you into the sharing with and use of your CPNI by Alphabet affiliates to receive this information.

Not very surprising, but #GoogleFi is using some #DarkPatterns to obfuscate "we are selling your call history and location data to the highest bidder for ad targeting" with the opt-out buried at the end of the email. fi.google.com/about/tos/#googl

The best part is they call it "opt-in" after pre-selecting the opt-in setting for everyone and sending an email saying you have 30 days to opt out. So that is just a lie.

YMMV, but I've always had unlimited #mobile data tethering by using #LineageOS (#GoogleFi is my current carrier, if that matters). I'm supposed to have a 5GB monthly tethering cap, but the Google Fi app reports 0B at the start of every day and does not ever appear restricted even if I exceed 5GB in one day.

Google Fi could use some work on their messaging.

“All plans now have full connectivity with compatible smartwatches”

“[E]xisting Simply Unlimited Users won’t have wearable connectivity turned on until after their first billing cycle following April 19, 2023.”

My previous billing cycle ended on April 19, but support says that I have to wait until May 19 to activate…

Google Fi is adding cellular Pixel Watch connectivity to my plan for free… six months after the watch came out and thus six months after I got my non-cellular model. 🙃

Previously, the entire family would have had to upgrade every line to a twice-as-expensive plan just for one person to use a watch. Now it’s just included.

Trying to decide if it makes sense to sell my Wi-Fi model to get a cellular model the next time they’re on a decent sale…

From my experience, my #Android devices require numerous #Google libraries in order to function properly with #GoogleFi, my current carrier. However, I swapped the physical SIM into my #Librem5 (#GNU #Linux, not Android) and calls, SMS, and mobile data worked out of the box. Great job, @purism!!

Next, I'd love to migrate to a Librem mobile plan once it's possible to transfer my existing number. 😊

So Mint Mobile is like Google Fi as that it uses T-mobile network. Google has notified customers that Google Fi was also part of that T-mobile security breach. So I'm sitting here waiting to see if Mint will send out some sort of notification to its customers.

I just received my Pixel 7 - upgrade from Pixel 6a. Because I'm a Fi customer I got a really good deal on the 7 heh. Looking forward to taking photos with this newer phone. Have to figure out what to do with the 6a! Maybe make it a smart home hub? Although I also have an iPhone SE and a motorola phone.. #toomanyphones #pixel7 #googlefi
