New #blog post: How I Watch YouTube

https://rldane.space/how-i-watch-youtube.html

I was going to work on a Part II to my last post ("You Really Can't Go Home"), but I couldn't find quite the angle I was looking for, so I'm shelving it for now.

This is just a fun and technical / tips & tricks kinda post (with a nice dash of opining and ranting for variety 😆) for watching YouTube without ads that was prompted by an episode of @tuxjam where @kevie complained that he didn't have a solid way to watch YouTube on Linux like he did with #NewPipe on #Android.

Something screwy going on with my internet today. I thought it was flaking in and out, but pings always resolve in a timely manner when targeting an IP address. Sometimes however, certain websites will just stop loading. If you turn on a VPN, or use Tor, that all goes away. So it's not the integrity of my physical link, it's something to do with either routing or DNS. I have power cycled all hardware including my ISP's.

I'll experiment with different DNS settings first.

So I just noticed that my ISP has started offering 2Gbps internet with the same rules as the 1 gig plan we have now. Symmetric speeds, no data caps, no filtered ports, reasonable price. Time to upgrade, 🙂

I work for a consultancy firm where we go into businesses and "digitally enable" them. All we really do is take their data and build them glorified excel spreadsheets with lots of auto formulas in. They pay a fortune for snake oil.
