This week's comic is about how easily conventional wisdom gets turned on its head by bad faith actors, especially in a media environment lacking responsible editors.

Reuters' Jeff Horwitz analyzes leaked memos that reveal that: 10% of Meta revenue comes from scam ads, and; Meta knows it, and; decided not to stop about it, because; the fines for facilitating life-destroying fraud are less than the revenue from helping destroy users' lives:

An article that talks about the killjoy of people using AI for fun activities, like escape rooms. A good read. But the part I like was the author’s playful use of enshittification.

Today I found out that google docs infects html exports with spyware, no scripts, but links in your document are replaced with invisible google tracking redirects. I was using their software because a friend wanted me to work with him on a google doc, he is a pretty big fan of their software, but we were both somehow absolutely shocked that they would go that far.

Apart from under the hood changes to brightness and auto-brighness in #Phosh that landed for 0.51 there's also now an indication when auto brightness is active and @arunmani added a toggle to settings so you can quickly turn it on and off. When auto-brightness is on the slider now also acts as offset to the calculated value. We have some more tweaks scheduled but that likely will happen in the 0.52 cycle.

@neil A universal basic income could help here.

Society should give everyone enough to live on and trust that they know how best to spend it.

Some of us would then spend it on doing useful things for society.

Trying to get a Thinkpad T430s working again.

It was working a few years ago, but now the only thing that happens when I push the power button is that the button light turns on, there's fan whir, optical drive click, keyboard light flash... and then nothing. The battery light also responds to AC connect/disconnect. Nothing on VGA port.

I left it unplugged for a while, replaced the backup battery (which was down to 1V), and same results.

What else should I be checking?

DOGE and others in the administration want to build a giant database of records by haphazardly combining info the government collected for one purpose, like paying taxes, and use it for another purpose, like targeting immigrants. We can't let this happen. takebackctrl.org/get-a-warrant
