Laura Ann Carleton was a mother of nine. She was a beloved shopkeeper in Lake Arrowhead, CA. And she was shot and killed for standing up as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

Her crime in the eyes of the murderer? Officials say he "made several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag” outside her store before shooting her. Her killer died later in an encounter with police.

So, I read a book that wasn't bad. Inexplicable things that didn't follow from what came before happened in the last page.

It finished with a message from the author: sign up to my mailing list and you'll get another chapter, the epilogue that (I really hope) explains things.

I feel betrayed and I'm certainly not signing up for the mailing list.

Would you?

@AkkalonAS I had one that needed his own special dish for a while. He quickly learned the phrase “private dining.”

(this is not a sub toot aimed an anyone in particular)

Hey creative people. When you write a post about your work on social media, no need to put in a disclaimer like "shameless self promotion" or to lead with an apology.

1) You made a thing. That's amazing!
2) You're allowed to tell other people about the thing you made.
4) You're even allowed to say it's for sale.

You're not forcing your message on anyone - especially not here, where there's no algorithm - and you're not manipulating anyone, or lying to anyone, or spamming anyone.

You made a thing, it's available for sale. No need for apologies or guilt about letting us know.

@lunalein @bookstodon The “sexy alpha [insert occult type here]” trend is gross and stupid.

Alpha werewolf? Based on bad wolf science. WTF is a sexy alpha vampire? A sexy alpha fae? Sexy alpha were-hamster? What?

Basically, not vibing with bad gender politics.

"All in" it now costs about $2300/mo to run Newsie.social.

That includes servers, moderation staff cost, insurance, etc. (most of the staff including myself work free on Newsie)

That's a big jump in costs over the past 3-4 months (largely because of Twitter's meltdown)

However we've reached the point of unsustainability because we take in only $1000/mo and we're running out of runway.
