While I'm sure that there are deliberate backdoors that occasionally make their way into packages via commits, nearly a fifth of all bugs being malicious backdoors, sounds extraordinarily unlikely.

The article itself says that for most projects, commits from new people are usually closely examined before projects merge them, meaning that malicious actors do better by hijacking distribution of packages (meaning the malicious code isn't even *in* the source code).

Something smells fishy here...
