@sophieschmieg it's a wildly insulting comparison and I am shocked every time someone makes it. Truly many "senior" developers have not earned the title.

Whenever I see "GenAI basically can do the work of a junior dev", I assume that those people are using junior devs very differently from me. To me, the value of a junior developer is maybe like 20% the code they write, and 80% is a down payment to a future where they no longer are a junior. I still haven't found an AI that could do that second part.

My daughter came home from school and said,
“Mom, you’re not going to believe what happened in history class today.”

Her teacher told the class they were going to play a game.
He walked around the room and whispered to each kid whether they were a witch or just a regular person. Then he gave the instructions:

“Form the biggest group you can without a witch. If your group has even one, you all fail.”

She said the whole room instantly lit up with suspicion.
Everyone started interrogating each other. Are you a witch? How do we know you’re not lying?
Some kids clung to one big group, but most broke off into smaller, exclusive cliques. They turned away anyone who seemed uncertain, nervous, or gave off even the slightest hint of being guilty.

The energy shifted fast. Suddenly everyone was suspicious of everyone.
Whispers. Finger-pointing. Side-eyes. Trust dissolved in minutes.

Finally, when all the groups were formed, the teacher said,
“Alright, time to find out who fails. Witches, raise your hands.”

And not one hand went up.

The whole class exploded. “Wait! You messed up the game!”

And then the teacher dropped the bomb:
“Did I? Were there any actual witches in Salem, or did everyone just believe what they were told?”

My daughter said the room went dead silent.

That’s when it hit them. No witch was ever needed for the damage to happen. Fear had already done its work. Suspicion alone divided the entire class, turning community into chaos.

And isn’t that exactly what we’re seeing today?
Different words, same playbook.
Instead of “witch,” it’s liberal, conservative, vaxxed, unvaxxed, pro-this, anti-that.
The labels shift, but the tactic is the same.

Get people scared. Get them suspicious. Get them divided.
Then sit back while trust crumbles.

The danger was never the witch.
The danger is the rumor. The suspicion. The fear. The planted lies.

Refuse the whisper. Don’t play the game. Because the second we start hunting “witches,” we’ve already lost.

If other jobs had the same hiring process as programming roles:

"For this sous chef role, we will only accept applicants familiar with modern cooking methods such as microwave ovens and freeze-dried Maggi powders".

So what's it like to use Linux as my main desktop OS for almost half a year now?

It's like I used to live in a fancy apartment with fine furniture and abstract art on the walls, everything "smart" and fully automated, except it wasn't mine. It belonged to an abusive landlord, who liked to come and go as they pleased, changing and rearranging whatever they wanted, sometimes telling me no, I can't do this or that for whatever reason. Every few months they'd increase the rent and install more cameras to make sure I didn't do anything they didn't like.

And now I've moved into a wooden cottage, built by my new strange but mostly friendly neighbors. They don't charge rent, they just thought building a house was fun and then they didn't know what to do with it. It has cool gadgets and contraptions too, but some of them are unfinished, in some places you can see the wiring where the plaster fell of the walls, and there's one room with a hole in the floor but we just put a wooden board over it and it's fine - we'll fix it eventually. It's still a nice house, cozy and warm, and I can put whatever I want on my walls and nobody bothers me. Sometimes the neighbors have loud parties at night and it's kinda difficult to sleep, but I've learned that it's a lot more fun to just join them instead.

I'm still friends with my old neighbors, though I admit I feel disconnected sometimes when I hear their landlord installed another camera in their bedroom, but they still can't bring themselves to live with loud neighbors and a hole in the floor. My first instinct is to argue with them, but then I realize it also took me twenty years living with that same landlord before it was finally enough for me, and if someone had suggested that I should move elsewhere, I also would have told them to fuck off. Because while it's always possible to abandon your home and move elsewhere, it sure isn't easy - it's often painful, takes a lot of time, and requires difficult compromises that may not be the right ones at that time. All I can say is that from where I am now, I'm pretty sure I'm not going back.

And to my friends who might feel addressed by this: there are far more important issues in life than your choice of apartment (or desktop OS), and I still love you

Da die Anhänger von Herrn Hitler immer bemängelt haben, dass wir ihn „bashen“, wollen wir ihn dieses Mal inhaltlich nicht widerlegen. Einen Faktencheck finden Sie nach dem Interview gut versteckt im Internet, sodass ihn nur unter 5 % der Zuschauer sehen. Solange bleiben die Aussagen natürlich stehen, und damit steht am Ende das Wort eines Interviewers, den Sie noch nie gesehen haben, gegen das Wort eines Politikers, den wir ständig auf unserer Plattform präsentieren.

Auch wenn dieser Politiker als gesichert rechtsextrem eingestuft ist, wollen wir ihm eine Plattform bieten. Denn wenn 24 % der Wähler ihn unterstützen, dann ist es offenbar egal, mit welcher Intention der ÖRR ursprünglich gegründet wurde.
